1. Situation. Since the Planning Committee for the 100th was wrapped up (and issued the final Plans Committee update message on Transition to RHQ Control 30 October 2009) there has been a rebalancing of the structures/lines of authority for the 100th. Colonel of the Regiment Ray Crabbe and the President of the Guard Dave Fraser have both re-affirmed their personal role in bringing the 100th to fruition from the strategic level, and have agreed that as Guard VP (100th Plans) Vince Kennedy should continue to assist them and the Guard in that effort, even while the PPCLI Trust gathers wind on fundraising, and the RHQ, Association and its Branches and REC spin up their control and ownership of the execution plans for the triad of major activities and the relay run. The draft TOR for the Guard VP (100th Plans) are attached (See Links, below!).

2. This message restarts a process of routine updates to those who are working on supporting plans for the 100th which do not fall directly to the REC or Association, and which I will continue to manage forward. I have attempted to place in the "To" line only those who might be considered to be working directly to deliver these elements of the plan - the "cc" line is for information purposes.

3. Current Planning Effort. COR has initiated the development of a Matrix of activities involved in the 100th from all sources, so that the REC, Guard and Association can all agree on the Programmes and their consituent projects/activities, with a view to reviewing this matrix together with PPCLI Trust members in the October meetings - the result will be to winnow out any activities that are not supported and to more clearly identify the resources needed to support this matrix - the result will be a sharper and more succinct Version 10 of the National Plan, revisions to the current PPCLI 100th site, and greater unity amongst the groups working to bring the preparations in Stage 2 of our campaign to fruition. The "Way Ahead" document governing this is attached (See Links, below!). I will share the Matrix as soon as I can. The PPCLI Trust group, which is already successfully fundraising for the 100th as its first phase of long term fundraising for the regiment, is moving forward quickly in terms of organization.

4. Public Information Committee. Over the spring summer Major Moran and I met with both Shaw cable/TV and community radio contacts in Winnipeg. It is our intent to start the initial meetings of the PI Committee in later fall 2010 or early 2011. This will permit a confirmation of the outreach that is set in the plans to begin in earnest in 2012. Membership might include Jim Stanton or a rep, Bill Aikman for Ottawa, CJ Wallace and Matt Brown for e-means, Regt Webmaster, and others intended to be in the PI game, - a specific message will get generated to start this process. Here we have the Navy's example of national ads for recruitment with the major message being based on the Navy's 100th.

5. Association Projects. Dave Pentney VP East continues to manage the Association projects (Ottawa, HGMP, Frezenberg, and hopefully, the Torch/Baton)that require Association financial commitment. These will all come to final approval stage in the next AGM in Wainwright 2011. I will be coordinating with Maj Moran and sharing with Ottawa Branch and the REC/Lead Battalion for the Ottawa Commemoration, specific actions needed to prepare for the Ottawa Commemoration (such as booking spaces and facilities).

6. Special Libations Team. I am temporarily coordinating the team on drinks etcetera. I have Dave Banks on Wines plus some solid advisors (and we are actively recruiting another member(s)), Dave O'Brien and me for Whiskey, and unnamed newcomers eventually if we go for a branded beer. We have contacted Diageo about the whiskey, and are looking for a face-to-face meeting with them in November 2010.

7. Stamp and Money Projects. Al Johnston in Ottawa continues. We now have the example of the Navy's success with their 100th coin (a loonie), and we will be trying for even grander things for ourselves. We and the R22eR are co-operating on approaches, which include a parallel approach for separate 100th stamps in a four block series for each regiment, or something akin to that. We will soon need some art work that we can suggest to Canada Post and that might possibly be a by-product of the research work on the annotated pictoral history project. We also have the first day cover to organize.

8. Private Returns Project. A teleconference with the main committee members and using a set of draft programmes for the trips is being scheduled for early September. Ray Paquin continues to chair the team consisting of Karen Koonar, Don Robertson, Grant MacNally, Hans Brink, and me. An update on this will be available at the October meetings.

10. Future Work. As the staffing capacity of RHQ to manage the full 100th slate of activities increases, they will take on more of the full responsibilities for the activities listed in this message, but this will be a incremental process. At the May 2011 REC/Guard meetings, each activity that is to be supported by the regiment will have to register an outline of how it is to be achieved. I will provide further advice as we get closer to that meeting on how we might do so for this disparate group of people.

HONORARY PATRICIA – Don Cherry

Ed’s note: Don, will no doubt soon have a new blazer (Red, Gold & Royal Blue) to match his Regimental Tie.

BACKGROUND: Members of our Regiment are grouped into four categories: serving members; retired members; titular members; and honorary members. An honorary member is defined in Paragraph 5, Article 120, Chapter 1 of the Regimental Manual, as follows: Honorary Patricia. From time to time, certain citizens who have displayed long-standing and unsolicited support of the Regiment may be honoured by receiving invitations to become life members of the Regiment. These members shall be referred to as Honorary Patricias. This honour will be bestowed only in exceptional circumstances and after the recommendation of the Regimental Executive Committee, the concurrence of the Regimental Guard and the approval of the Colonel of the Regiment in consultation with the Colonel in Chief. A record of honorary members will be maintained in the Regimental Manual, Annex D to Chapter 1.

APPOINTMENT OF MR. DON CHERRY AS AN HONORARY PATRICIA:

Our soldiers have often said that Don Cherry should be a Patricia. They admire and respect Don Cherry's unabashed pride of being a Canadian, his unstinting public support of the Canadian Forces, especially since the beginning of the Afghan campaign, and his recognition of the families of Canadian Forces members. They like his unmatched hockey knowledge too. They feel that Don Cherry shares many common values with us and as such is worthy of being a Patricia.

Earlier this year acting on our soldier's behalf I asked our Regiment's Commanding Officers to discreetly poll their units to see if the proposal to make Don Cherry an Honorary Patricia was widely held. Additionally, senior members of the Regiment and our Association advice were sought. Across the family the results were clear; make Don Cherry an Honorary Patricia. I asked Don and he agreed to join our Regimental family. We are all pleased and proud of having him as a member of our Regimental family and look forward to welcoming him into our family.

PRINCESS PATRICIA'S CANADIAN LIGHT INFANTRY - 100TH ANNIVERSARY CELL

Good Morning Gentlemen:

I am pleased to inform you that the PPCLI 100th Anniversary Cell was formally established over this past Summer and is now operational.

Major Sean Moran is the 100th Anniversary Regimental Secretary and Master Warrant Officer Jim Butters is the 100th Anniversary Sergeant Major.
